The Judicial Training Institute on Monday January 22, 2024 hosted the African Legal Information Institute (AFRICALII) Director, Ms Mariya Badeva.
Ms Badeva is in the country on a four-day visit intended to streamline AFRICALII and Uganda Legal Information Institute (ULII) connection in the context of law reporting in order to improve and broaden Uganda's jurisprudence information sharing in legal research information globally.
The Director was welcomed by Court of Appeal's Hon. Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, who doubles as the Chairperson Law Reporting and Technology Committee.
He commended AFRILII for the technical assistance extended to ULII in terms of upgrading the appearance of the ULII website and also attributed the increase in ULII usage to the relationship with Laws Africa.
"This has improved the appearance of ULII with a strong ability to hyperlink." he said.
Hon. Justice Kiryabwire shared that the Judiciary was developing a Judgement writing tool in collaboration with Lexis Nexis, with one of the perks being the ability to put everything in the same workspace.
He however addressed the need to train all Judicial Officers in Law Reporting.
Court of Appeal's Hon. Justice Fredrick Egonda-Ntende noted that ULII was about 20 years old and that it was time to reflect on where it is and where it intends to be.
Day I of the visit was comprised of meetings with the ULII administrators and implementing unit at the Judicial Training Institute. She is also set to hold several key stakeholder engagements during her visit.
Ms Badeva said AFRICANLII was looking forward to making ULII better and that she would be conducting a detailed operational meeting with the ULII team in that regard. She also commended the ULII team for their excellent performance.
"The major goal of ULII is to develop software, improve ULII's capacity, and form collaborations with underdeveloped countries, " she said. Adding that it also includes editorial, information and communication technology and editing standards.
MS Badeva's visit is of significant importance for Uganda in capacity building, collaboration, access to legal information and best practices.
